Saddle Bronc Riding Arena Record Broken Twice

CALDWELL, Idaho – Aug. 21, 2010 -- It took 10 years for Billy Etbauer to match the Caldwell Night Rodeo record of 89 points set by Kevin Small in 1999.

Etbauer did that here last year when he won the championship. With 12 great bronc riders and Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) horses in the final round here, no one was surprised that the arena record was broken. However, when they broke it twice, rodeo commentators had both the rowdies and the civies on their feet.

First to break the record was the 2008 world champion Cody Wright from Milford, Utah. Wright rode the Burch Rodeo horse named Friendly Fire for 90 points. He held that record and the lead for the championship here briefly. Two rides later, Shaun Stroh got on the Calgary Stampede horse named Lynx Mountain. When the judges added up their scores, there was a new arena record at 91. Stroh also won the rodeo with a total of 174 points on two rides. He added $4,967 to his earnings and is headed to his fifth NFR. Prior to Caldwell’s rodeo, Stroh was ranked fourth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings.

“I was really excited when I found out I had that horse,” Stroh said of Lynx Mountain. “It was an amazing list of horses. The guys that come here, they come to win. That was one of the best bronc ridings I’ve ever seen.”

The big money winner here was Matt Shiozawa and that made Idaho rodeo fans really happy. Shiozawa lives in Chubbock and won both the final round and over-all title. His total time of 26.3 seconds netted the tie-down roper $7,834.

Two Wyoming cowboys were atop the leaderboard in the bull riding. Will Farrell from Thermopolis beat Kanin Asay from Powell for the championship by one point. Farrell rode two bulls for 166 points and won $4,822. The shoot-out in the steer wrestling was between world champions Dean Gorsuch and Luke Branquinho. They were tied coming into the final round. Gorsuch had the most success stopping the clock in 3.6 seconds. That gave him the final round win and the overall title with a total of 12.3 seconds on three runs. Gorsuch earned $7,391. Branquinho, from Las Alamos, Calif., had a total time of 13.4 seconds to win almost $6,500.

The 76th Caldwell Night Rodeo saw rodeo contestants earning $248,949.
