Cowboy Sports News About Us
It all started in a hayfield in early July of 1990 in the deep East Texas woods of Coldspring, Texas. Father and son, Mike and Alan Jeffrey had an idea to make a better rodeo paper.
From humble beginnings with a 16 page August 1990 edition thrown together in a week to over 80 pages and an average press run of 15,000 papers and a readership of over 50,000 on a monthly basis, we have come "a long ways". That first paper lost us $50 but we knew we were on to something bigger.
The Cowboy Sports News has been very good to the Jeffrey family for 20 years. The first years were spent with layout tables in Alan’s college apartment in Huntsville, Texas. In 2002 Alan and wife Tori took over the reins full-time and have continued the work started by Alan’s parents. From literally cutting and pasting paper to grid sheets to the modern laptop computers, The Cowboy Sports News has progressed into the modern age of publications.
Today Alan, or Big Al’ to his fans, competes in calf roping, team roping and steer roping. Tori has been converted to a team roper, breakaway roper and continues her childhood dream of barrel racing. Alan and Tori’s son Carson who turned 12 in 2010 is getting better at his calf roping day by day. He won his first buckle in the summer of 2008 in the breakaway and is looking for that next one already.
The Cowboy Sports News is mainly distributed in Texas and the surrounding states, but with the addition of CowboySportsNews.com in 1999 our readership extended worldwide. We are the only rodeo magazine with a "free" page by page full on-line edition for the entire world to see at the touch of a button. We also have the largest free calendar section of any rodeo publication in the nation in both hard copy and web formats. CowboySportsNews.com is your place for rodeo.
We pride ourselves as being the #1 read paper in Texas and the surrounding regions pertaining to rodeos and associated events. In rodeo circles we are commonly referred to as "the bible" of rodeo. We are the "official publication" of the United Pro Rodeo Association (UPRA), the Cowboys Pro Rodeo Association (CPRA), the(CRRA), the American Cowboys Rodeo Association (ACRA) and the Louisiana Rodeo Cowboys Association (LRCA). With the membership base of these associations you can rest assured that your message will be heard in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and parts of Kansas, Missouri and Mississippi.
We are the only regional rodeo publication with advertising and readers from every facet of rodeo. Amateur, Youth, College, Professional rodeo and event specific associations can be found in our pages each month.
In 2010 we are proud to annouce the addition of video episodes to our CowboySportsNews.com website. Big Al’ has plans to travel the rodeo world and capture video that you wouldn’t normally see on the national tv shows and bring it into your living room right on your computer. These weekly web episodes feature rodeos, ropings, barrel racings and other events found in the pages of the paper. We hope you’ll join us each week to see what’s new in the world of rodeo.
